As the EfficientCEO my focus is typically centered on automation, process improvements, technology innovations and all things efficient. And then a reality-jarring event like the earthquake in Haiti occurs. As a Californian an earthquake anywhere strikes especially close to home and I’m reminded of how fragile our complex worlds truly are. While we have the luxury of earthquake building standards and extensive resources to recover from an earthquake, Haiti does not. And even with our luxuries we all live with risk and peril of unsafe drinking water resulting from a catastrophe.

This lead me to think about two aspects regarding tragedy: a) how can I help others in need, and b) what will I do to ensure my own safety if I don’t have safe drinking water?

While I would love to donate my software services, what Haiti really needs right now is clean water and supplies. Although I can send cash, doing so doesn’t feel fulfilling or impactful. That’s why I turned to my friend who owns a water bottle company: the president of Ecousable.

There’s so much to like about this approach to helping Haiti.

1. It will help people access clean, safe water for the next 6 to 12 months or longer.
2. It eliminates plastic bottles being sent to Haiti (which has huge shipping costs and impact on the environment).
3. It will help those who buy Ech2o bottles survive future catastrophes and avoid water-related illness when travelling.

NOTE: I personally know about water-related illness while traveling!
During my three week vacation in South Africa (Dec ’09 to Jan ’10) I used my Ech2o bottle non-stop. One day we went to a Chinese restaurant.
